Forgotten Shore is a collage composition. 8 layered tracks of recordings from a single reel (Tascam TSR-8). The tide water is a recording. The birds are numerous edited recordings. Originally the bird recordings was going to be a take at a Xenakis type granular recording tape composition. The rocks thrown into the water are Akai s5000 samples. The cicadas were recorded at the back of our house. The heart beat is a Akai s5000 sample. The rolling electronic bird is a Akai s5000 sample that has been put onto a tape machine with a pitch adjust & then mic'D.
Kettle is a group of birds wheeling and circling in the air and can may be composed of several different species at the same time. Why birds do this? Because there is food on the ground? A staging area before they migrate? A warm updraft? There are lots of theories as to why. This is an all out blitz of an algorithm directing it's generated midi results at a emu-procussion module & an Akai sampler. Moments of chaos. Pure Date has this great song creating routine in connecting a modulus [%] or [metro] object to --> a [spigot] object. This is a juncture where you can switch between instruments or whole parts of a track. As where the bass guitar & the piano switch back and forth playing lead in the track "keys to the lock". During Kettle, this is ever so visable, as the percussion gives way to the sampled pad, for quite sometime before resuming.
